I decided to sit down and do a r/redditgetsdrawn. I am pretty happy with the results experimenting with line. Hopefully the woman that I chose to draw likes it to!
An Experiment with Charcoal and Gold Leaf
An experiment with Charcoal, Gold Leaf, and little gold paint. The photo could be a little better, Gold leaf always looks ugly in the wrong lighting. It is also little more grainy than it should be.

Read MoreDante Alighieri
This is the #drawing i made during the car ride to Chicago last weekend. It is based off of a portrait of Dante Alighieri painted by Botticelli. It was a challenge because of stretches of shitty highway conditions which lead to a lot of bumps. I am happy with the results. It is 4.25x6 inches drawing.
Life Drawing post #2
Here are a few more life drawing sketches. None are more than 30 minutes, most are anywhere from 1-10 minutes
Life Drawing Studies
I decided i am going to start posting some life #drawing studies, #sketchesand drawings i have been doing for the past year and half. Most are from life, some are from photos. There really is no particular order. Some may be older, some newer. Some are quick masters studies. Almost all of the drawings are done in 30 min or less, some even as little as 1 or 2 minutes. Enjoy
Value Study
Value study of the Emperor Nero walking the streets of Rome. I was trying to get a sense of atmosphere, and liveliness with this study.
The Caravaggio Study and its Wip
This is my study of a Caravaggio piece. I attached a Wip file of it also. I tried to take screen shots whenever I remembered to. Hopefully this will
give a little bit of insight into the process of my study.
I felt it was a great study of value, light, brushstroke, and color. I enjoyed every minute of it. I tried to use his process
as far as i could see documented. I started with a really dark umber ground. Then moved on to gray scale for the
character. I then used several color layers to build up color. After the color layers i collapsed the painting down.
I then painted directly on top of the canvas to push color, and value.
Second Caravaggio Wip
This is the Second Wip of My master study of Caravaggio's Bacchus from 1595.
Next comes the fun part!
My current Master Study i am doing WIP
Here is the first WIP of the Caravaggio painting i am doing as a master study. I started out with a grid to try to get the original composition as accurate as possible. This piece looks simpler then it is. I did not even think about it until i had to go in and start drawing the fruit basket. So much little detail. I think it will be a great, fun, and rewarding experience stepping into this masters shoes (with leaving out the being a murderer part haha).
Read MoreStandards that discourage art students who are pursuing concept/movie/comics book art →
The public perception of what concept art means is severely skewed.
While I have to accept that people broadly label art created for games and films concept art, including promotional illustrations, it is necessary to get real about what concept art as a craft actually is.
Read MoreCaravaggio Skin tone Study
This image is very rough, not exactly 1 for 1. It was done as a skin tone exercise and i feel that i accomplished my goal. I got very close to the skin tone of the original it made me very excited! I was also using the great book Color and Light by James Gurney as a little bit of a guide.
The 80/20 rule
The 80/20 Rule is an old mathematical formula created by the Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto. At the time, Pareto stated this rule was based on the principal that 20% of the population owned 80% of the wealth. In later years this rule has been used in many different ways and you have probably heard a few of them too, such as: 20% of the salespeople produce 80% of a company’s sales. Or 20% of the employees produce 80% of the companies’ profits. Another is that 20% of the population pays 80% of the countries’ income taxes! My rule is that an artists should be spending 20% of their time creating art and 80% of their time marketing and administering to their art business in order to be a successful artist.

Classy Beauty Wip
Here is a slight work in progress pictures showing beginning drawing to finish. She is is an amalgamation of many features from many woman.
She changed from the initial drawing. I wasn't exactly happy with the smile. After scanning it look goofy to me. I just ended giving her a neutral face instead.
Artistic reads i would recommend!
I recently have been doing ton's of figure drawing to hone my craft. When i get to the point that i want i plan on just kicking out tons of work. The art books right now that i have found especially insightful about Human anatomy are: Anatomy a complete guide for artists by Joseph Sheppard, Drawing Lessons From The Great Mastersby Robert Beverly Hale, and for use of color and light, Color and Light by James Gurney. I would recommend them all. They have been very helpful, and a must for anyone who is serious about painting or artistic anatomy.
My Wip for The X-Men Issue 4 homage
These are various Wips of how i came to the end product!
Sketches from the Minneapolis Institute of Art
I walked over to the MIA,because i have not been there in a few years. I decided to sketch some of the statues.
The First one was this Roman statue in their Greek/Roman western antiquities wing.
The Second Being this great bust of the Emperor Hadrian.T
The second turned out much nicer than the first, The first one in retrospect was like a warm-up for this one. I was really into the Fabric, i could have kept at this all day long but i drew this coming up on the closing hour of the Museum.
Man i am Bad with updating this Haha
There is tons of new work i have displayed on the site.
I have been working constantly at drawing the Human figure in all sorts of positions, and angles. Stuff is really starting to come together for me. The best is yet to come.
